As the final horse crossed the finish line, a new vision was born: The Downs, a 577-acre community designed to honor the past while embracing a bright future.

From our rich history to our exciting future, this timeline tells the story of the milestones that have guided our journey forward.

1950: Scarborough Downs opens.

Scarborough Downs opens its gates and quickly establishes itself as a beloved local landmark and gathering spot for over 60 years.

1973: The iconic half-mile oval track is built.

The addition of the half-mile oval track solidifies Scarborough Downs’ place as a premier destination for horse racing in the region.

1970s-80s: The height of Scarborough Downs.

Scarborough Downs reached its peak, drawing large crowds and becoming a beloved landmark in Maine’s racing history.

2018: The Downs land acquisition.

The land for The Downs was acquired, marking the beginning of Scarborough’s future transformation into a dynamic, mixed-use community.

2019-2020: The Innovation District comes to life.

The Innovation District officially broke ground in September 2019. By July 2020, we celebrated its grand opening, welcoming the first two businesses and setting the stage for more.

2021-2022: Welcoming residents home.

In May 2021, Phase One of the Town Center Residential District was completed, introducing 135 mixed-use residential units. By 2022, residents began moving in.

2023: Idexx grand opening.

As a leader in the life sciences industry, Idexx’s grand opening in the Innovation District brought innovation, growth, and new opportunities.

2023: Maine’s first Costco opens.

Maine’s first Costco opened its doors in November, attracting a surge of visitors and creating hundreds of new jobs.

2024: Construction begins on Phase One of the Town Center.

Construction begins on Phase One of the Town Center, setting the stage for an expanded residential district and the introduction of new retail spaces, continuing the transformation of The Downs into a vibrant, dynamic community.
